Chico Adopted!

Chico, 2 year old recently gelded pony, about 10H, also a little hungry.

Owner could no longer afford to feed them.

Mama is a POA, not sure of the sire.

Special Ed $800
2003 Paint Colt by Winskip Moon x Gemini Dreamer

ed.jpg

No papers because the dam's papers were dropped somewhere along the line. Owner just doesn't want to feed them any more, and needs the room. She runs a foaling operation for TB breeders. They were all taken for board owed. Nice fat healthy horses!

Ground manners are a bit rough, due to being out to pasture all summer, but not bad really. Pretty good with feet, used to being trimmed. Load well in a trailer, but not real sure how to back out yet. Only done it twice. Right now I'm working on handling heads as they really don't like being haltered, but can be done with a little work. Getting better every day. They do lead well. Special Ed is an 'in your face' goofball and earned his name. Both the boys are still a bit jumpy since the trip, but they will be fine once they settle in here.

Little Rock aka Rockie
rockie.jpg

3/10/05
Little Rock, 4 yr old gaited filly. Tried to jump out of a round pen, flipped and hurt her back, she's mobile but limping, has trouble getting up if she lays down on the wrong side. Owner hasn't the money for the vet, wanted her to have a chance. He has to work and just couldn't be there to help her up.

3/25/05
Vet was out today for another look at Rockie. Yep, the hip is broken. But the good news is, since I'm willing to work at it, she has a good chance of healing sound. So I will be working real hard for her for the next 6 months. Sure am glad she isn't a real BIG horse! I have to pick her up a couple times a day, if she lays down.

4/26/05
Rockie is doing well, slowly gaining weight and moving better every day. Looks like I will be able to turn her out with the other 3 year olds in another couple months. She's short-striding on the broken hip, but willing to trot on it.

5/26/05
Rockie is out to pasture with the drafties and Cat, with Feather to keep order. She gets around well, shortstrided on the injured side, but will canter and buck at will. Has gone from spooky and hard to touch, to in-your-face, scratch my ears, and has grown 3 inches taller!

6/15/05
Rockie and her hip are improving every day. She can now canter a bit without going 3-legged, and doesn't limp much any more, although she will probably always be short-strided on that leg. She may not ever be rideable, but there is hope she will be able to handle some light harness work in about a year or so, when she is stronger.

8/12/05
Rockie surprised the heck out of us by foxtrotting, at speed, across the pasture, several times! Healing well there!  She is doing very well!

Update 12/16/05

Rockie doesn't know she has a problem, she can foxtrot with the best of them! Her hips will probably always be a bit uneven, but it doesn't slow her down any.

newrockie.jpg

4/27/06

As you can see from the above picture, Rockie is doing fabulous!  Doesn't even know she's any different!  She will be great pulling any kind of cart!

Friday, mini donkey

Small grey donkey, found wandering the highway this morning. No one has claimed him all day, in spite of radio announcements and the sheriff's office trying to help. Cute friendly lil guy, very easy to handle. If he is not claimed in 30 days, he will be adopted out.  Already have an adopter in line too!
He's in good condition but for a few minor nicks and scrapes, like the one on his face. I keep thinking surely someone would be missing him by now. The only donkey owner in that area moved away several months ago.

Peppys Sugar Dusty, AKA Rebel
Adopted!!!  Congratulations Maryellen!

Rebel
reb.jpg

Peppys Sugar Dusty, AKA Rebel, 1996 gelding, black/bay, about 16H, grass founder with 2 degree rotation. This is a beautiful boy! His dam is The Model, sired by Mr San Peppy. His sire is Rapid Bar Peppy, Sugar Bars and Poco lines. As mild as his problem is, should have him sound by spring. His young owner was jumping him before he foundered.  This boy was bred in Brighton Tn.

Update 12/16/05

Rebel is coming along well, got most of the slight rotation pulled back with shoeing. Time will do the rest for him. Been riding him a bit lightly to keep him in shape. He's no longer limping.

UPDATE 12/10/2006 From his new owner Maryellen who renamed him Rascal!

Just wanted to give you an update on Rascal since we bought him in September.  He is so sweet.   Everyone loves him.    We purchased an older morgan horse, "Lucky",  to keep Rascal company.  They are like two peas in a pod. Pics below are of him in his new home.

Misty - 20 year old Doc Bar mare

misty01.jpg

She's packing down the senior feed, a little bermuda, a little grass. Can't seem to hold much yet, but I'm feeding her several times a day in small amounts. At least she isn't quidding the hay, so the teeth aren't real bad, like poor old toothless George. She will get a full vetting . Feet are awful too, all dried and cracked, underrun heels.  Looks like a little arthritus in one knee too, not too advanced to help.

3/14/05 She's getting perkier, and has an appetite now, eating everything I throw in her tub. She's up to 8 lb senior, 5 lb beet pulp (before soaking) and 8 lb hay cubes before soaking, a cup of oil, a little grass to nibble on and about 6 pounds of bermuda. I will worm her in another week, I think she will be strong enough by then. Needs her teeth done, but putting off anything stressful til she's stronger. She is now yelling at me if I don't get it there fast enough! 3 square meals a day can work wonders.

5/3/05 She's almost 300 pounds better! Still has a ways to go though. At least the crud is gone from her skin now.

6/23/05 Well, this little girl definitely knows how to eat!  She's actually kinda fat now!  So, I've actually had to cut back her feed a tad!  She does have a mysterious lameness issue going on, next time the farrier comes out, we're going to discuss it, but other than that, she's sweet, fat and sassy now!  Amazing what a little TLC and some food can do!

8/12/05 Misty is walking much better since we put front shoes on her. Still can't pinpoint the problem, basic generic heel pain. Possibly due to the very underrun heels we are working on.

There is no improvement with her heel pain but she is definitly holding her weight very well!  Amazing what FEEDING a horse will do.

DAKOTA, 20 YR OLD BELGIAN/QH MIX
sound for riding

Dakota
dakota.jpg

12/17/05

Dakota is an Arkansas resident that was given to Ozland by Traci Yarbrough.  Traci took wonderful care of Dakota but he was simply too much horse for her family and he needs a new home that can handle him.  His ground manners are just wonderful and he is very calm, however, he requires an experienced rider.
He's approximately 16hh and weighs about 1200 lbs.  He's 20 yrs old.

Shirley and Silver
shirleysilver.jpg

Silver was donated because he "came with the farm" and the new owners were just not horse people. He has been grass foundered.

12/17/05

Silver was adopted by Traci Yarbrough, and her son, Shaun of Arkansas.  Silver will be Shaun's  mount to learn on, and we bet that he'll teach him alot!  Just look at that smile-there's one happy boy!

Annie

annieday1.jpg

Annie is a coming 5 AQHA mare, brought here by a friend of the rescue, malnourished, infected pastern from an untreated rope burn, and rainrot. Broke to ride and sweet natured.

Once Annie is well and ready for a new home, she already has an adopter lined up!

anleg.jpg

After a month, her leg is healed, but has some scar tissue, sound to go on though. Rainrot is cleared up, and she has gained a good 100 pounds, according to our vet. Still hard to see it, when I see her all the time.

Jordan

appboy.jpg

Jordan is about 6-7 year old Appy, malnourished, and was just wandering the neighborhood making a pest of himself. Owner is refusing to claim him, soo...He will be ready to adopt as soon as he gains a few pounds and gets gelded. NOT broke. Rode twice by owner, dumped him the second time, owner lost interest.

Dannyboy is a 6 year old BLM branded mustang, abandoned at a sale barn. As you can see, he was in dire need of groceries but has filled out very nicely. He trailers and handles well, and has been ridden 4 times.  He is sweet as can be AND READY FOR ADOPTION!

STONEWALL JACKSON
Stonie will be boarded at OHR!

Stonewall
stonewall.jpg
9 yr old Hackney mix, Harness Trained

stoneysauce.jpg

5/11/05 This lil guy had it pretty bad for a while, fine harness pony, had a wreck and a beating for it. He is prone to sudden panic attacks, and is jumpy whenever he is being handled. A very nice lady rescued him and worked with him for 2 years, and never really managed to make a difference for him. And he's only 9 years old!

Until his issues are somewhat resolved, he will not be up for adoption.

5/26/05 Stonie will now come to ME for scratchies, works well on the longe without getting upset, acting more like your typical pony. Half this boy's problem was simply his diet! He's been off grain for nearly a month, and is MUCH calmer! Still a bit headshy if he doesn't see you coming, and nervous with his hindquarters.

7/11/05 Stonie posed all pretty for the camera with one of our Volunteers, who has been giving him full body massages every other day. It seems to be relaxing him a lot, and getting him past being jumpy about his rear end being handled. He has also lost a few of those extra pounds he didn't need! Looking much better!

Stonie is still the same shy gentleman as always.  He does not like strangers but is warming up to me.

It's going to take a gentle soul to gentle this one.  He is still very wary of strangers.  But is he not the most beautiful pony?

Above picture, Preacher the day after he got here.

He was rescued per the sheriff's office, starving and badly dehydrated. He is still being held here pending judge's decision on whether the owner gets him back or we keep him.  Let's all pray the judge makes the right decision.

The above picture is from July 20.  Preacher has gained about 300 pounds in the 58 days he's been here.

Little Mae Bee QH/Foxtrotter

maebeecoll.jpg

Mae Bee is 7 months old, and a bit stunted, but with her huge appetite, that will soon pass. The gentleman who owned her fell on hard times and was having trouble keeping his horses well fed. So he did the right thing for this lil lady and put her in a better situation.  She really is a very sweet and well behaved lil girl.

2/2/06

Miss Mae is going to "manners school" as she is entirely TOO pushy, and a bit nasty at feeding time!

Storm

Severn Thunder

Welsh Pony

25 year old registered Welsh pony gelding, sire is a many times national champion named Severn West Wind. This lil guy was at stud til about 8 years ago when he was gelded due to damaged "parts". He also has his share of cart wins, very flashy blue roan, and still very healthy, if a bit thin. He was bred at Severn Oaks in MD.  Class "A" Registered.

His new owners are Dividing Ridge Farm.  Click his picture to go to their website!

UPDATE 12/8/05

Received this email from a friend of Thunder's new owner.

We (Dividing Ridge and Excel Farm) own several ponies in common and she 'lent' him to me for the Marshall Texas Welsh show and I have refused to return him as he has become my buddy! He hangs around the porch of the house and the barn and follows me around like a dog when I'm out on the property. When our cold snap started yesterday, he was out playing 'stallions' with one of our 2 year olds and it was too funny. Hard to believe he is 25!  Even Mary Beth thinks I am a bit lulu about Thunder. But hey, we are all entitled to a few quirks and there just aren't that many ponies out there that will sit on the porch with you.

Sadie's Sweet Face

Rescued by Shawn Brabham, aka Desert Rat in TN on HC, in June, 2005, she took her home and was going to send her to Oz for rehabilitation.  In July, 2005, she decided she was going to adopt her!  Boy, if only all of these could be so easy!

Just ONE month later! What a difference!
